Shanti Celeste joins Bradley Zero at the Pool Hall

shanticeleste_v2_hires-01

After an antipodean dominated summer, we are back with Bristol’s finest Shanti Celeste, joining Bradley Zero for the next dance at Canavans. We can’t wait!

An integral part of the dance music scene in Bristol for many years, Shanti has converted her prowess in the west country to across the globe with sets this year in Chicago (smartbar), Vancouver, Sweden, Estonia to name a few! Having started working in Idle Hands record shop in Bristol years back, building up a collection of the finest records old and new, branching from jazz to electro. With eclectic tastes making her a versatile selector perfect for any basement, festival stage or pool club shakedown.

Shanti’s skills as a DJ and producer tend to lead to dancefloor destruction. Be warned. With releases on Future Times, Apron Records, Secretsundaze and her own BRSTL imprint, its no wonder her phenomenal demand as a DJ brings her to nations far and wide.

Bradley Zero extended session at the Pool Hall

dankye16V1_hires-01

Unbelievable scenes last time with Prequel, and continuing our antipodean romance we have another coming to the pool hall going by the name of Dan Kye, joining Bradley Zero and Z Lovecraft.

Dan Kye was created from the subconscious. An alter-ego (of Jordan Rakei) so to speak. An artist that is a piece to a bigger puzzle. His live set consists on live looping, live sequencing, playing keyboard and singing. He has played before in the pool hall (before Max Graef) and his first experience of London, coming off the plane, was Rhythm Section NYE 2014. No better inauguration! A musical talent, and definitely one to watch in the near future…

Bradley Zero will be bringing more records than usual for an extended session in the booth. Somewhat a rare occurance in the pool hall, so expect a voyage through past, present and future.

Accompanied by protege, crate-digging, riddim loving 100% certified Rhythm Section team member otherwise known as Mali, Z Lovecraft. With possibly too much time spent in YAM Records (infront and behind the counter), twiddlin’ knobs in the studio, and with a debut EP earmarked this year with an emerging local label, get to know. First came to Rhythm Section #2 in 2011 and hasn’t left since: holding it down for BZ with the likes of Cosmic Slop, K15, and Andrew Ashong.

Prequel returns to the Pool Hall

prequel_hires-01

After a show stopping extravanganza with NYC’s finest Mr Saturday Night, we are back with Rhythm Section OG producer and selector PREQUEL.

With another Rhythm Section International release on the way very very soon, and having previously blown away the likes of Gilles Peterson and Lefto with his inaugural release we can’t wait to let release what 10 more releases on our side and 2 years of hard work in the studio from Prequel have amounted too. But until then we have Prequel all the way from Melbourne, Australia on his European tour selecting the finest house, disco, soul and everything in between at the pool hool. Joined as ever by our host and resident Bradley Zero.

Auntie Flo brings the afro-future to Canavans

auntie flo_v1hires-01

Earlier this year, Bradley Zero joined Auntie Flo at OSSIA #3 for an all night b2b session in a warehouse in Manchester and people haven’t stoped talking about it since. Acting on that success we decided to bring Auntie Flo down to Peckham ASAP. 4 months later and here we are…

Hailing from Glasgow, Highlife’s founder Auntie Flo brings his worldly selections to the pool hall. His voyage began in 2003 and since then he’s had residencies at Sub Club and Plastic People, a monthly show on Rinse FM, released on Kompakt, Comeme, Autonomous Africa, 2 critically acclaimed LPs, and an array of stellar EPs.

Fusing his afro-futuristic sounds with house, disco and techno, his well-travelled record bag will most definitely take you on a journey.

Bradley Zero returns afresh from his Australia tour… You know what to expect!!

LIVE! w/ Max Graef Band & Soccer96

maxglife

LIVE! is a coming together of two local institutions to provide something new for the community; real live experiences from the best local and international players. Rhythm Section and Peckham Chamber Orchestra (PCO) join forces once again to present an international trio of live musical offerings.

After the incredible success of our first two LIVE! events; last month’s Melbourne double-whammy of SilentJay and Jace XL, Swooping Duck (Hiatus Kaiyote’s rhythm section and improv geniuses) alongside London’s own Shepherd + Reginald Omas Mamode IV and December’s Afrofuturistic extravaganza, we’re hugely proud to present another very special show featuring a Germany-England sonic play-off where everyone is a winner!

Artwork by Anu Ambasna

Max Graef Band

Born out of a multitude of quality collaborative projects, including founding Money $ex Records and Box aus Holz label, the multi-talented Max Graef formed five-piece Berlin disco jazz ensemble in 2015.

Their acclaimed first album “Dog” released in December 2015 eloquently describes their unique sound – a rich blend of jazz, kraut, soul, funk, electronic and contemporary. Their live game is serious – a classic setup of Fender Rhodes, bass guitar and drums coming along with a truly innovative approach to effects, synthesizes and samplers – expect improvisational virtuosity!

Max Graef Band’s family vibe speaks to the conceptions of Rhythm Section and PCO respectively as well as the union of the two for LIVE! Itself.

It’s a rare treat to witness the force that is the Max Graef Band, currently on their European tour, do not miss Berlin’s finest perform their only London show!

Soccer96

London/Brighton-based duo Danalogue and Betamax describe their sonic output as ‘Alternative Slamming Analogue’- an apt description indeed.

Their two EPs Soccer96 and Jupiter Masterdrive released on WotNot Music to critical acclaim. These prolific lads are also two thirds of The Comet is Coming along with their sax-man Shabaka Hutchings (who performed at December’s LIVE! with TBMO). We’re in for an intergalactic psychedelic drum and bass workout!

Max Graef + KickFlip Mike (DJ)

Rhythm Section regular, Max Graef will be spinning some disks for us alongside Kickflip Mike; Max Graef Band’s drummer, former runway model, and aka ‘The White D’Angelo’. If their Copenhagen Boiler Room set (ft. Wayne Snow) is anything to go by, expect the banging, the sublime and everything in between.

LIVE! with Swooping Duck, SilentJay x Jace XL & Shepherd

LIVE_2_FINAL.jpg

LIVE! is a coming together of two local institutions to provide something new for the community; real live experiences from the best local and international players. Rhythm Section and Peckham Chamber Orchestra (PCO) join forces once again to present an international trio of live musical offerings.

After the incredible success of our first LIVE show last year featuring Yussef Kamaal, The Brother Moves On and Duval Timothy, we are pleased to present a very special show, featuring 2 of Australias most vital outfits, with support from an ascendent local artist in the form of 22a Music‘s Shepherd.

Swooping Duck
Paul Bender, Simon Mavin and Perrin Moss are 3 of Australias finest musicians, flying free on 100% improv mode: No music, no tunes, zero material to fall back on. Just ears, adrenaline, focus, being in the moment, pure improvisation.
When not blowing minds-on-the fly with their Swooping Duck side project, Bender, Simon & Perrin form the backbone of 2 x Grammy nominated outfit, and our favourite band in the entire world – Hiatus Kaiyote.
Don’t miss this opportunity to hear this music for the first, last and only time.
Our man Bradley Zero was Lucky enough to see the trio at the Melbourne International Jazz Festival, and we can confrim that his mind was indeed, blown. Musicianship of the highest callibre – not to be missed!

S I L E N T J A Y x JACE XL

Coming straight out of Melbourne with plentiful attitude, Producer/multi-instrumentalist Silentjay has teamed up with fellow Hiatus Kaiyote backing vocalist, Jace XL to present their unique strain of future leaning, retro rooted R&B.
Their Debut Mini-Album, ‘Sacrifice’, drops on our very own Rhythm Section INTL label mid April and is already causing something of a stir. The more devoted fans amongst you may have already grabbed one of the limited edition casette tapes – they flew out, prompting us to follow up with a 12″ release.
At once sincere and heartfelt, the songs do not shy away from the playful influence of 90s RnB – a sound that is a defining influence on the record, which despite clocking in at just under 30 minutes, attains a level of artistry and conceptual cohesiveness that many artists could only dream of.
On stage, the duo marry a slick delivey of harmonised vocals with live keys and beats, never failing to work the audience into a sensual frenzy. Jaws wll drop, potentially panties too and just you wait until Jay whips out the sax!
Buy the Record, learn the words, and join us in this officially unnoffical launch show.

SHEPHERD

Local soul singer Shepherd steps forward with a bunch of brand new material, representing Peckham alongside 22a Music / Five Easy Pieces affiliated beatmaker Reginald Omas Mamode IV.
