LIVE! w/ Max Graef Band & Soccer96

maxglife

LIVE! is a coming together of two local institutions to provide something new for the community; real live experiences from the best local and international players. Rhythm Section and Peckham Chamber Orchestra (PCO) join forces once again to present an international trio of live musical offerings.

After the incredible success of our first two LIVE! events; last month’s Melbourne double-whammy of SilentJay and Jace XL, Swooping Duck (Hiatus Kaiyote’s rhythm section and improv geniuses) alongside London’s own Shepherd + Reginald Omas Mamode IV and December’s Afrofuturistic extravaganza, we’re hugely proud to present another very special show featuring a Germany-England sonic play-off where everyone is a winner!

Max Graef Band

Born out of a multitude of quality collaborative projects, including founding Money $ex Records and Box aus Holz label, the multi-talented Max Graef formed five-piece Berlin disco jazz ensemble in 2015.

Their acclaimed first album “Dog” released in December 2015 eloquently describes their unique sound – a rich blend of jazz, kraut, soul, funk, electronic and contemporary. Their live game is serious – a classic setup of Fender Rhodes, bass guitar and drums coming along with a truly innovative approach to effects, synthesizes and samplers – expect improvisational virtuosity!

Max Graef Band’s family vibe speaks to the conceptions of Rhythm Section and PCO respectively as well as the union of the two for LIVE! Itself.

It’s a rare treat to witness the force that is the Max Graef Band, currently on their European tour, do not miss Berlin’s finest perform their only London show!

Soccer96

London/Brighton-based duo Danalogue and Betamax describe their sonic output as ‘Alternative Slamming Analogue’- an apt description indeed.

Their two EPs Soccer96 and Jupiter Masterdrive released on WotNot Music to critical acclaim. These prolific lads are also two thirds of The Comet is Coming along with their sax-man Shabaka Hutchings (who performed at December’s LIVE! with TBMO). We’re in for an intergalactic psychedelic drum and bass workout!

Max Graef + KickFlip Mike (DJ)

Rhythm Section regular, Max Graef will be spinning some disks for us alongside Kickflip Mike; Max Graef Band’s drummer, former runway model, and aka ‘The White D’Angelo’. If their Copenhagen Boiler Room set (ft. Wayne Snow) is anything to go by, expect the banging, the sublime and everything in between.

LIVE! with Swooping Duck, SilentJay x Jace XL & Shepherd

LIVE_2_FINAL.jpg

LIVE! is a coming together of two local institutions to provide something new for the community; real live experiences from the best local and international players. Rhythm Section and Peckham Chamber Orchestra (PCO) join forces once again to present an international trio of live musical offerings.

After the incredible success of our first LIVE show last year featuring Yussef Kamaal, The Brother Moves On and Duval Timothy, we are pleased to present a very special show, featuring 2 of Australias most vital outfits, with support from an ascendent local artist in the form of 22a Music‘s Shepherd.

Swooping Duck
Paul Bender, Simon Mavin and Perrin Moss are 3 of Australias finest musicians, flying free on 100% improv mode: No music, no tunes, zero material to fall back on. Just ears, adrenaline, focus, being in the moment, pure improvisation.
When not blowing minds-on-the fly with their Swooping Duck side project, Bender, Simon & Perrin form the backbone of 2 x Grammy nominated outfit, and our favourite band in the entire world – Hiatus Kaiyote.
Don’t miss this opportunity to hear this music for the first, last and only time.
Our man Bradley Zero was Lucky enough to see the trio at the Melbourne International Jazz Festival, and we can confrim that his mind was indeed, blown. Musicianship of the highest callibre – not to be missed!

S I L E N T J A Y x JACE XL

Coming straight out of Melbourne with plentiful attitude, Producer/multi-instrumentalist Silentjay has teamed up with fellow Hiatus Kaiyote backing vocalist, Jace XL to present their unique strain of future leaning, retro rooted R&B.
Their Debut Mini-Album, ‘Sacrifice’, drops on our very own Rhythm Section INTL label mid April and is already causing something of a stir. The more devoted fans amongst you may have already grabbed one of the limited edition casette tapes – they flew out, prompting us to follow up with a 12″ release.
At once sincere and heartfelt, the songs do not shy away from the playful influence of 90s RnB – a sound that is a defining influence on the record, which despite clocking in at just under 30 minutes, attains a level of artistry and conceptual cohesiveness that many artists could only dream of.
On stage, the duo marry a slick delivey of harmonised vocals with live keys and beats, never failing to work the audience into a sensual frenzy. Jaws wll drop, potentially panties too and just you wait until Jay whips out the sax!
Buy the Record, learn the words, and join us in this officially unnoffical launch show.

SHEPHERD

Local soul singer Shepherd steps forward with a bunch of brand new material, representing Peckham alongside 22a Music / Five Easy Pieces affiliated beatmaker Reginald Omas Mamode IV.

LIVE! Yussef Kamaal Trio, The Brother Moves On (SA) and Duval Timothy at Bussey Building, presented by Peckham Chamber Orchestra + Rhythm Section.

live2

LIVE! is a coming together of two local institutions to provide something new for the community; real live experiences from the best local and international players. Rhythm Section and Peckham Chamber Orchestra (PCO) join forces to present a debut concert of 3 acts which span jazz, classical, hip hop and psychedelic rock from a positively afro-futurist perspective.

The first LIVE! event presents South Africa’s “most important band”, The Brother Moves On (TMBO)- featuring Shabaka Hutchings – MOBO award winning saxophonist with Sons of Kemet alongside Hannah C. Jones on theremin.
The Brother Moves On released their fourth studio album ‘Shiyanomayini’ in October 2015. ‘Shiyanomayini’ is the beginning of the collective’s new project, ‘Black Tax’ which will see TBMO release a track a month for the next 9 months.
Hannah, who will be hosting the event alongside Bradley, is a multi-instrumentalist, artist and conductor of the Peckham Chamber Orchestra.

The Yussef Kamaall Trio is new project of Henry Wu (keys) and Yussef Dayes (drums) featuring Tom Driessler on Bass. The Trio caused a stir after their headline slot at Jazz Refreshed at the Festival Hall and have since played a sold out show at Ronnie Scott’s. The Trio, who regularly collaborate with 22a head honcho Tenderlonious on sax, have also secured a coveted spot at Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide awards in January 2016. This is a special chance to see the group in an intimate, local setting, before they go stratospheric.

Duval Timothy, perhaps better known as a published author, artist and chef of the pioneering groundnut dinner collective, is also a pianist, whose solo works have caught the attention of a number of key tastemakers in the city. We welcome the south-east London native here at LIVE! for his debut solo performance.

TICKETS ARE £10 AND ONLY AVAILABLE IN ADVANCE.
PLEASE NOTE THAT DUE TO UNPRECEDENTED DEMAND WE ARE NOW HOSTING IN BUSSEY BUILDING, NOT RYE WAX!
